Doctor Spotlight: Dr. Hikmat Aboudan Shares Passion for Transforming Smiles
For Dr. Hikmat Aboudan, orthodontist at Benevis-supported Taylor Dental & Braces in Lake Charles, Louisiana, his chosen career allows the perfect blend of healthcare and aesthetics, allowing him to make a positive impact on his patients’ lives.
While studying at the University of Aleppo in Syria, he explored various dental specialties and discovered his true passion for orthodontics. “Seeing a patient’s occlusion transform from severe malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth and/or jaws) to a confident, healthy smile is incredibly rewarding,” says Dr. Aboudan, who later completed his residency at Georgia School of Orthodontics in Atlanta.
One of the aspects of orthodontics that Dr. Aboudan values most is the opportunity to build lasting relationships with his patients. Unlike routine dental visits, orthodontic treatment requires regular appointments over the course of two or three years. “Many of my patients are young and self-conscious about their smiles, but after their treatment, I see them blossom into confident teenagers or young adults. That transformation is deeply fulfilling,” he explains.
When considering where to practice, Dr. Aboudan initially leaned toward working in a larger city. However, after visiting the Taylor Dental & Braces office in Lake Charles, which had been recently renovated following significant damage from Hurricane Laura in 2020, he was drawn to the advantages of working in a smaller community. “Lake Charles reminds me of Aleppo, with the added convenience of no traffic,” he notes.
Dr. Aboudan is also committed to engaging with the local community by visiting nearby businesses to promote his services and establish strong connections with his patients and their families. “Dentistry is more than just a job—it’s about making a meaningful impact on people’s lives. If you invest time and effort, it can be incredibly fulfilling,” he shares.
He advises aspiring dentists to explore different fields within the profession before making a final decision. "It’s a rewarding career, but it requires passion, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Shadow professionals in different specialties to ensure it aligns with your interests," he suggests.
Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Aboudan understands the value of orthodontic care firsthand because he wore braces himself. He emphasizes the importance of proper orthodontic care and reminds his patients to stay committed to their treatment for the best results.
